What to do with 5000 spare Red Stripe cans
As the Caribbean rhythms of Notting Hill Carnival faded for another year, distinctive red striped bins filled with cans were left throughout the famous street. But what can you do with 5,000 spare Red Stripe beer cans? Well, Red Stripe has taken these cans and turned them into a great piece of Jamaican influenced art with Yuri Suzuki.
Suzuki was impressed by the Jamaican reggae sound systems and instruments he had seen in Jamaica, which were built out of a variety of everyday objects. What most impressed him about the systems was the fact that they still projected amazing, unique sound. Suzuki worked with a group to attach all the cans together into a 2.5 meter tall sound system.
Suzuki invited DJ Al Fingers and singer/songwriter Gappy Ranks to test out his system. Fingers hooked up his DJ equipment to the sound system while Ranks was given a microphone made out of a Red Stripe can. They improvised a Jamaican and dubstep influenced track.
The sound system was unveiled at the Village Underground. Several artists used the sound system to perform their music, including Ben UFO and MC Chunky. The event was a huge success and we’re looking forward to the next project in the ‘Make with a Red Stripe’ series.
